Dry Canyon

Dry Canyon is a paragliding flying site at 2121 m elevation, in the New Mexico region of the United States. The launch faces SW. This page consolidates multi-model weather forecasts, the GO / CAUTION / NO-GO flyability score, the vertical windgram and the thermal emagram so pilots can plan their flight in one place.

Wind and orientation. Dry Canyon flies in SW winds, meaning the airflow must come head-on into the launch. Any component outside that window triggers CAUTION or NO-GO depending on intensity. The launch is rated safe up to 43 km/h sustained wind, beyond which ParaRidge switches to NO-GO. The hourly forecast table and the vertical windgram both show wind direction and speed at takeoff altitude, hour by hour, for the next five days.

Weather model and forecast. For Dry Canyon, ParaRidge auto-selects the best-available model (HRDPS, GDPS or GFS in North America; AROME, ICON-D2 or ECMWF in Europe), then surfaces hourly forecasts for today and the next four days. The windgram stacks the vertical wind profile of every hour into one chart; the emagram reveals cloud base, thermal ceiling and the instability band — the three pieces of information needed to estimate whether the day is flyable and how long the thermals will last.

How to read the GO / CAUTION / NO-GO verdict. ParaRidge cross-references the forecast wind direction against the launch's orientation window, the wind speed against the safety limit, and the gust speed against the maximum threshold. GO means every check passes; CAUTION that at least one threshold is borderline (you stay pilot in command); NO-GO that the direction is wrong or the wind exceeds the window. The reasons are always spelled out — no opaque score, no magic. At Dry Canyon as anywhere else, the final go decision remains the pilot's, after local briefing and direct observation.

Getting there: 105°53'10.00'W x 32°55'38.50'N. Accessible by 4x4 only on a badly eroded US Forest Service Rd. Turnoff from main road is here: 105°53'6.71'W x 32°56'54.82'N. You will have to go to Google Earth to see the road. Ratings: This site is P3 because you have a very short space ( 10 m) to launch because of rotor behind the ridge. HG launch: This is where the F.S. road takes you. This is not the recommended launch for PGs. It is more difficult to inflate the wing there because of the steep hill and rotor. Make sure you have good kiting skills as PG pilot. NO TOP LANDING! PG launch: From the HG launch, hike east to a rock band. There is an opening that allows to walk down to a col where the launch is located. It is clear of bushes and features a perfect 30-40 degrees rolling slope, no rotors, and slightly lower winds. HG to PG launch is a 5-7 min hike. 105°53'3.58'W x 32°55'35.33'N You can soar the ridge for hours, go XC, or do a sledride of about 15 minutes. This is a fun site but there is substantial turbulence, especially in the spring and summer. Paragliders should launch before 10AM or after 4PM during the summer as it often gets blown out in between those times -- hang gliders only. In the fall and winter, PG is often good the whole day. For the longest PG flights, get to launch around noon or 1PM and wait until conditions are appropriate. This is not a crowded site. Dry Canyon: thermal, ridge soaring, XC site in New Mexico, USA. Which model should I pick?

Fine-mesh models (1–3 km: HRDPS, AROME, ICON-D2, HRRR) resolve terrain and thermals well, but only reach +1 to +2 days. Use them for the day you actually fly.

Coarse-mesh models (10–25 km: GDPS, ARPEGE, ECMWF, GFS) miss valley detail but reach +3 to +10 days. Use them to scout a window 3+ days out, then re-check on a fine-mesh model the day before.
