Marmolada

Marmolada is a paragliding flying site at 3105 m elevation, in the Trentino Alto Adige region of Italy. The launch faces N. Wind and orientation. Marmolada flies in N winds, meaning the airflow must come head-on into the launch. Any component outside that window triggers CAUTION or NO-GO depending on intensity. The launch is rated safe up to 43 km/h sustained wind, beyond which ParaRidge switches to NO-GO. The hourly forecast table and the vertical windgram both show wind direction and speed at takeoff altitude, hour by hour, for the next five days.

Weather model and forecast. For Marmolada, ParaRidge auto-selects the best-available model (HRDPS, GDPS or GFS in North America; AROME, ICON-D2 or ECMWF in Europe), then surfaces hourly forecasts for today and the next four days. The windgram stacks the vertical wind profile of every hour into one chart; the emagram reveals cloud base, thermal ceiling and the instability band — the three pieces of information needed to estimate whether the day is flyable and how long the thermals will last.

How to read the GO / CAUTION / NO-GO verdict. ParaRidge cross-references the forecast wind direction against the launch's orientation window, the wind speed against the safety limit, and the gust speed against the maximum threshold. GO means every check passes; CAUTION that at least one threshold is borderline (you stay pilot in command); NO-GO that the direction is wrong or the wind exceeds the window. The reasons are always spelled out — no opaque score, no magic. At Marmolada as anywhere else, the final go decision remains the pilot's, after local briefing and direct observation.

Marmolada: paragliding site in Trentino Alto Adige, Italy. Elevation 3105 m. ...Wonderful experience to do, climb on foot to the top of the queen of the Dolomites and then take off with the paraglider and glide up to Canazei. Clearly the thing is very demanding, either because of the 3342mt altitude, or because it is a glacier and because it takes perfect conditions. Climbing to the top of the Marmolada involves mountaineering preparation, the ability to know how to move on the glacier and a good workout. For those who do not have to move on this terrain or in any case do not feel completely safe in doing so, we recommend that you consult a local mountain guide (call us for info on this). The starting point is the Fedaia pass, from here you go up towards the glacier with indications for the Pian dei Fiacconi refuge. The glacier begins just above the refuge, put the crampons in the direction of the Roccette (short rocky passage leading to the summit plateau) this passage is served by steel cables, which however do not completely cover the stretch. Once you reach the top of the Rocette, go up towards the refuge (refuge located 200/300 meters above sea level. In summer, the refuge also offers the possibility of staying overnight, so you can also think about climbing, sleeping there and taking off the following morning. (highly recommended for the fantastic sunsets and sunrises). The take-off takes place a few meters below the refuge heading north. Which model should I pick?
